The scoop on Widgets and Plugins

Updated for WordPress 2.8: I had an interesting question from a client last night, wondering how come her gorgeous sidebars disappeared when she put widgets in them. Here's the scoop: Sidebars: Most of the time, the theme you are using gives you two options. First, you can just leave the sidebars without widgets and the default stuff will show up. Usually Categories, Archives by month, Search, Pages, and Meta Data.  And the second option is to use Widgets. To use the default sidebars: In your administration panels, go to [Appearance] -> [Widgets]. Remove all widgets from within … [Read more...]

Inspiration: Babies Gotta Have It

This was a collaboration with the gals at Ruby and Roja.  They put together these graphics to resemble 'film' which is appropriate since she is primarily a vlogger.  And we added some cute titles in the sidebar with a punch of red, and a background of green - it is her stance that as a product reviewer, she can still be judicious in what she uses, and what she tosses.  "A well-supplied baby can be a green baby! Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! Your baby will be glad you did." We are so happy to have Ruby and Roja to work with - they are simply amazing! AND, we couldn't be more proud of our … [Read more...]

How to add thumbnail images to excerpts

Of course there is more than one way to do this, but we'll use the plugin, "Thumbnail for Excerpts". Log into your Admin Panels and open the "Plugins" panel. Click on "Add New". On the next screen, click the "activate" button. That's it! And now, IF your theme shows excerpts in any page - for example, the archives - then you … [Read more...]

How to Display the Feed Button

To some people words like "feedreader" and "rss" make their eyes glaze over and focus attention to that speck on your tooth.  So why not loose the geekeze, and make it easy for readers to subscribe?  Let them, "get an email every time you post" instead of "subscribe in a feedreader". Here are the subscription options and displays for some of the best sites out there: Copyblogger: This is my favorite title for a subscription feed "email updates" - how could you mistake that?   Note, that copyblogger's audience is primarily bloggers, and yet- why use geekeze like rss & feed when you … [Read more...]
