First, Thesis is a great theme. Second, there are other great themes too. Since I cannot compare Thesis to any theme, as themes are not created equal, I will compare Thesis to my recommended premium theme source: StudioPress.

* some StudioPress themes have these options available from the WP Menu
** IMPORTANT: In Thesis, access to the templates is only available through ‘hooks’. To use hooks, requires writing plugins.
SUMMARY: For the sole reason that access to the templates is limited (for me), I prefer using StudioPress. This is my personal preference as a designer, and if you want me to design your site from scratch, I would choose StudioPress. If you do NOT plan on editing the templates, or hiring someone to, then I would HIGHLY recommend Thesis. It does provide the non-technical person with a huge array of options.
2 corrections …
1. We’ve built in an option for changing the column order in Genesis
2. I would say it’s premature to say that Genesis has better SEO than Thesis. Thesis is the gold-standard when it comes to WP theme SEO, IMO.
3. We haven’t yet built in a carousel for Genesis.
4. Thesis handles post thumbnails without a plugin. It’s part of the in-post options.
Thanks for your insights, Nathan. I am a fan of the single post templates script you wrote! (Also included with some SP themes.) What is this genesis of which you speak? Oh dear. Just read the announcement. Not at all excited. Those are my exact same concerns with thesis.
– I’m not a fan of no-follow for everything.
1. My chart is corrected – actually those options are available int he options page of some SP themes.
2. I prefer the SEO in SP than the options avail in Thesis
3. The carousel code is built into the template, so that once the plugin is installed thats all there is to do. I don’t believe it is built into the code in Thesis.
4. being ‘in post’ options in Thesis, you mean custom fields? I thought one of Brian’s themes had a thumbnail automatically pop into the home page? Its possible I substituted the timthumb script with the get the image script, which would NOT make it built into SP.
I really appreciate you stopping by! Thanks.
& Congrats on your new assignment with SP!
